Obama calls for healthcare reform in 2009 |

|
President Barack Obama pledged Tuesday to cure Americans from what he called "the crushing cost of health costs," saying the country could not afford to put healthcare reform on hold. Obama pointed to the increasing number of uninsured and rapidly rising healthcare premiums, which he said was one reason small business closed their doors and corporations moved overseas. Obama's prescription for healthcare reform included making "the largest investment ever" in preventive care, rooting out Medicare fraud and investing in electronic health records and new technology in an effort to reduce errors, bring down costs, ensure privacy and save lives (Martin, CNN.com, Feb. 25, 2009).

State, feds disagree on use of opioids |

|
The feds are going to get stricter with the prescribing of narcotic painkillers such as OxyContin, while the California workers' compensation system is considering a "more liberal standard" for the use of these medications (Johnson, Sacramento Business Journal, Feb. 24, 2009).
At least that's how the California Workers' Compensation Institute interprets the approach of each agency, as described in a bulletin the Oakland policy research group released Monday.

Growth in national health expenditures expected to slow by 2009 as a result of the recession |

|
Growth in national health expenditures (NHE) in the United States is expected to significantly outpace economic growth in 2008 and 2009 due to the recession, according to a report issued today by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). The report was prepared by CMS's Office of the Actuary and published online by the journal Health Affairs (CMS News Release, Feb. 24, 2009).
In 2008, growth in national health expenditures is expected to be 6.1 percent, as health spending increases from $2.2 trillion in 2007 to $2.4 trillion in 2008, while growth in the economy, as measured by the gross domestic product (GDP) is anticipated to be 3.5 percent. For 2009, health spending is projected to increase 5.5 percent while GDP is expected to decrease 0.2 percent. The health share of GDP is expected to increase from 16.2 percent in 2007 to 16.6 percent in 2008 and to 17.6 percent in 2009. This represents about one-third of the total increase in the health share of GDP for 2008 through 2018.

"Sunshine" bill sets $100 trigger for disclosing drug industry pay to doctors |

(Physicians who receive $100 or more from drugmakers or device manufacturers over the course of a year would have those payments posted to the Web under bipartisan Senate legislation introduced in January (O'Reilly, amednews, Feb. 23, 2009).
The new bill is stricter than a version of the measure circulated last year that received support from industry and organized medicine groups, including the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America and the American Medical Association.

Documentary to focus on prescription drug abuse |

|
Jason Surks was like any other teenager. He grew up in central New Jersey, attending Rutgers University to become a pharmacist. He had a supportive home environment, and his mother worked in substance abuse prevention. However, little did his family know that the 19-year-old was abusing prescription drugs for about six months. He passed away from a drug overdose in December 2003 (Amato, Sentinel, Feb. 25, 2009).
